Composite vs Aluminium vs Steel

Custom Gates

Composite gates

Composite gates are one of our best sellers due to the great pricing and the variety of styles it can offer. With a steel frame the gates can be shaped into many different styles such as a traditional looking gate with a bell top with barred top bottom or even middle.

Straight tops are the number one seller now due to their more modern look. With a streel frame it also means a lot more freedom on deign which wood wouldn’t allow. One customer in particular had some railheads fabricated onto the frame.

Another customer had a more classic bell top with a barred top. The boards themselves were a sanded effect. Both the frame and the boards were a matt black with the frame being painted in our in-house spray booth.

Deciding on the composite board itself can have a big impact on the style itself. We use a local supplier in South Yorkshire. His composite boards come in two different styles: sanded composite and 3D embossed wood effect as well as a slatted composite board in either the wood effect or sanded.

The standard embossed wood effect boards are what our customers typically prefer as its extremely realistic offering a nice organic look without the cons of real wood (rot and warping).

However, if you chose composite you have a limited choice on the colours. We do not recommend painting over the composite boards as paint doesn’t take well to the boards often streaking and reacting weirdly. But painting the frame can make a good statement like this customers gate below.

Steel Gates

Steel gates are great for either a real traditional looking gate or an extremely modern one. The bars themselves don’t offer much privacy unless close together.

All these gates like composite are completely in-house. The frame made-to-measure and fabricated in our Tuxford workshop. Embellished and fitted with a locinox lock and sanded.

Once it has been sanded and thoroughly cleaned and dried, we move the gate to our paint booth where some our senior team members will coat in a protecting coat before actually painting it.

Unlike composite steel offers a lot more colour options and can be painted in any RAL colour of you’re choosing. The gate below has been painted with RAL 7016 which is a soft anthracite gray.

The gate below is a similar design but with the patterned bars being vertical also in a Gray RAL with some steel bars flat and others on its side creating that strange patter.

We also offer steel gates in a more traditional style. Whether it be a simple or heavily embellished. The image below is one of the simpler ones besides the engraved name. Its in a glossy black RAL although it can come in matt.

We do many styles in steel from palisade to farm gate. We have even done unique request like the gate you see below. The steel frame contains all antique gardening tools that we had bought and welded onto the frame taking great care to ensure it was strong and stable.

Aluminium Gates

Our aluminium gates like composite can be great for privacy as their solid boards block out, your property giving you privacy. Unlike composite gates however the boards can be painted over (unless you’re wanting a wooden print where you get set colours) although it would only be a solid colour with no prints or embossing.

Aluminium is also more resilient than steel meaning it’s a good as a metal alternative. It’s extremely rare for aluminium to rot unlike steel and the lightness doesn’t too much stress on any automation meaning its less likely to damage it – though still possible.

The frame can also be fabricated into many different styles. The image below is a pointed top aluminium in a stark white.
